Review

This is the first film adaptation of the Hunger Games novels. This film covers the events of the first book, where a girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take the place of her sister in a game where children hunt each other in a battle royale styled arena killing game.

Lawrence plays a decent Everdeen, especially capturing Katniss’ anger at the Capitol and her stubbornness in the face of obstacles. Woody Harrelson plays the character arc of Haymitch Abernathy very well and Josh Hutcherson plays a decent lovestruck Peeta Mellark. The sound design and cinematography were both decent, I liked many of the shaky action shots. My favourite aspect of the film, however, is the excellent visualization of the book. The character, costume, and set designs were a fantastic portrayal of the scenes in the book. I especially liked the character design of the Capitol citizens, such as Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley), and Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks).

Conclusion

Decent visual adaptation of the book.
