Review

This is the film adaptation of the second Hunger Games book. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) are called back into a special edition of the Hunger Games, where only previous Hunger Games champions participate.

This film felt much more dramatic than the first and the script allowed for more emotionality than just from the main characters. From the cold and cunning Cornelius Snow (Donald Sutherland), to the somehow endearing Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), to the kind Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), the side characters are more flushed out and actually make an impact on the story. I especially liked the relationship between Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) and Mags (Lynn Cohen). In fact, I liked many of the side characters more than the protagonists.

The same excellent costume and set design from the first film was still present in this film. Although the actual Hunger Games portion of this film did not feel as exciting as that of the first, this film felt like an improvement upon the first film with the strength of supporting characters.

Conclusion

Less Hunger Games but stronger supporting characters.
