Review

In this mummy remake, Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton, a US Army Sergeant who “liberates” artifacts from insurgents in the Middle East. Morton and his sidekick Chris Vale (Jake Johnson) stumble upon the tomb of Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), an Egyptian princess who made a deal with the god Set and was buried alive after murdering her own family. In the tale almost as old as time, the archaeologists, which includes Morton’s love interest Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), find that Ahmanet is not quite the stereotypical mummy.

As with the 1999 The Mummy film, this film is predominantly an Indiana Jones-esque action adventure with elements of the supernatural. Unlike its predecessor, this film has more up-to-date CGR action scenes but lacks the charm of Brendan Fraser. Tom Cruise, while amazing in many roles, is probably not the best actor for the role of the playful and roguish Morton. What ensues is Cruise trying his best to crack corny jokes while Johnson’s Vail desperately tries to be comedic relief. Wallis’ Halsey is also largely inconsequential. The only standout performance for me is Boutella’s Ahmanet, who is seductive yet powerful. The whole subplot with Russell Crowe’s Jekyll and Hyde character serves solely to set up future films in Universal’s Dark Universe and is mostly irrelevant in this film. I do like the premise of the secret society, though; it reminds me of Hellboy.

Conclusion

Mis-casted characters but decent action scenes.
