Review

I remember when this game first came out and it was all the rage. I’ve probably played it a dozen times or more at different parties in high school. The premise of the game is very similar to that of Apples to Apples; the players take turns being the judge, and the judge picks a black prompt card, which is oftentimes an innocuous phrase with a blank space. The non-judging players try to play a white word or phrase card that they feel best fits said blank space. Unlike Apples to Apples, the cards are much less politically correct and are targeted towards a much more mature audience.

Due to the cards being so much more outrageous, the humour can be much less nuanced than Apples to Apples. Despite this, if playing with a group of people with a similar (dark) sense of humour, the game can still be very nuanced. The outrageous prompts also open up avenues for some truly twisted and dark humour unavailable to Apples to Apples. The game also builds upon Apples to Apples by having more elaborate prompts, some of which include multiple blank spaces to fill in.

The game, as with Apples to Apples, relies heavily on the group you play with. Unlike Apples to Apples though, Cards Against Humanity is much more reliant on luck, as some of white cards are inherently much funnier than others, so if one isn’t able to draw the really funny cards, it may be tough to win. Despite the variety of both the black prompt and white response cards, replaying the game multiple times can get tiring as one familiarizes oneself with the cards. I do like the minimalist black and white aesthetics of the game, though.

Conclusion

A funny game to play with degenerate friends.

DLC Reviews

I know, technically not DLC but still an add-on.

Everything Box

Added July 16, 2023

I knew that Cards Against Humanity had many add-on packs, but this was the first time I’ve ever played any. The pack adds 300 more cards to be played. These cards feel more vulgar than the base deck; I sometimes got the feeling that the creators were trying too hard to be edgy. The cards also have a more political, current events theme, which I appreciate because it matches well with my sense of humour.

Overall rating: 6.9

Absurd Box

Added August 7, 2023

This pack adds 300 more cards to be played. The pack features some very edgy card pertaining to sex as well as race. The pack also features some very bad cards, though. The effect is that this pack feels much less balanced than the base game.
