Previous Jack Ryan review:
The third season of Jack Ryan follows Ryan (John Krasinski) as he tries to unravel a secret Cold War-era plot to reestablish the Soviet Union. Ryan, on the run from authorities after an operation gone wrong, must team up with veteran Russian intelligence officer Luka Goncharov (James Cosmo) to stop the new threat.
This season still has the thrilling Clancy action sequences but also a plot that centers much more on the geopolitics between Russia and its neighbours which definitely draws some parallels with real life Russia, especially with regards to the influence of NATO. The plot isn’t incredibly intricate and there are definitely some plot holes, but I can see the appeal of the story for fans of classical spy stories like The Hunt for Red October and le Carré novels. Krasinski’s Ryan is fantastic and I especially enjoyed Cosmo’s Luka who nails the dry and cynical archetype of a former Soviet intelligence officer. The returning cast includes Wendell Pierce’s James Greer, Michael Kelly’s Mike November, and Numan Acar’s Tony. New cast members include the bureaucratic CIA station chief Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel), the conflicted president of the Czech Republic Alena Kovac (Nina Hoss), and Alena’s veteran father Petr (Peter Guinness). Overall the supporting cast were all decent with no standouts.
A ton of plotholes and many spy genre clichés but a fun watch.
