Movie Poster
Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.
Previous Doug Liman film review:
Loosely based on the Japanese light novel All You Need is Kill, the story takes place after a species of invasive aliens known as Mimics have landed on Earth and destroyed much of continental Europe. The United Defense Force decides on an all-out offensive against the Mimics starting with the invasion of France. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is sent to the frontline of the invasion, along with Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a renowned war hero. Cage quickly gets killed in the offensive but realizes that he wakes up during the day before the battle everytime he dies.
Honestly the first thing that I noticed about the movie is the terrible font that was being used in the movie poster. The font is so bad that I thought the film is just another generic Hollywood blockbuster. I’m glad I gave the film a chance. The story is pretty awesome and reminded me much of the Warhammer 40K universe, where soldiers are being sent relentlessly into the meat grinder of war. Cruise’s cowardly Cage has amazing character development and his chemistry with Blunt’s Vrataski is great; some scenes were reminiscent of The Matrix Revolutions, with Trinity and Neo traveling to confront the Machines. The supporting cast, which includes Brendan Gleeson’s General Brigham, Bill Paxton’s Farell, and Noah Taylor’s Dr. Carter, are fun to watch as well. While the film is by no means incredibly deep or thoughtful, the story is interesting, the action sequences are decent, and there is also a sense of humour.
A fun Hollywood blockbuster.
