When you come to the end of the line, with a buddy who is more than a brother and a little less than a wife, getting blind drunk together is really the only way to say farewell.
Previous Tarantino reviews:
I finally watched the latest Tarantino, the film which he considers his magnum opus. The film takes place right after the Golden Age of Hollywood, during the late 1960s. Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) is an aging Western star who hopes to revive his fading career. Dalton’s best friend Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is also his stunt double. The two live their lives in Hollywood, all in the backdrop of the infamous Manson Family murders.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but high expectations because I enjoy Tarantino films and both DiCaprio and Pitt are amazing actors. The story is great, especially for fans of film history. Even for someone who wasn’t alive back then, the film still oozes nostalgia. The pacing is definitely very Tarantino, it starts very slow and benign and takes its time to build up to a violent climax. This film in particular really takes its sweet time in building up and Tarantino only hints at the real conflict in the first half of the film. Both DiCaprio and Pitt were phenomenal but the character development is pretty inconsequential. From the supporting cast, I really enjoyed Mike Moh’s dramatic Bruce Lee and Margaret Qualley’s manic Pussycat.
A good movie, although I'm not knowledgeable enough in film history to fully appreciate it.
