Review

Rocky IV is such a film of its time. It features Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) facing his greatest opponent in the ring, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a man engineered by the Soviets to dominate within the ring.

As with all Rocky films, this is a sports story about Rocky overcoming near impossible odds. Stallone's intense Rocky is fun to watch while Lundgren's laconic Drago is iconic in his physicality but paper-thin as a character. The plot is also overly dramatic and corny, almost like an Italian melodrama. My favourite aspect of the film is the underlying Cold War tension between the US and the USSR. While a bit too on the nose and a tad jingoistic, Rocky IV is a fascinating film of its time.

Conclusion

Introducing one of the most iconic sports film villains.
