You have the grand gift of silence, Watson; it makes you quite invaluable as a companion.
Previous Guy Ritchie film reviews:
Other than the BBC Sherlock series, this film is probably one of my favourite portrayals of the consulting detective. In this film, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) investigate the sinister crimes of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), an occultist who has seemingly returned from the dead to terrorize London.
Downey Jr.’s Holmes, while not physically resembling Holmes from the books, perfectly captures the misanthropic and antisocial aspects of Holmes’ character. Law’s Watson acts as a foil for Holmes and the two have great on-screen chemistry and are fun to watch. Rachel McAdams’ Irene Adler and Strong’s Lord Blackwood are solid in their roles as well. While this is not necessarily a faithful adaptation of the books, Ritchie creates a fun and fast-paced criminal romp through the streets of a dark and Gothic Victorian London. The setting of the late 19th century London is very memorable and almost has a steampunk feel. As always, Hans Zimmer’s score is fantastic.
A fun adaptation of a classic character.
