Review

Ex-intelligence officer Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) finds peace at a small town called Altamonte in Southern Italy. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes clear that the locals are being harassed and intimidated by members of the Camorra. McCall must once more take up his mantle as protector of his newfound friends.

Washington’s cool and stoic McCall is always fun to watch. This time around, he really portrays the age and fatigue of his character. This film is much slower and more atmospheric than the two previous films. The film takes time to build up to the crescendo of violence and gore with spanning shots of the beautiful Italian oceanside and narrow town alleyways. This film feels much less like an action movie and more like an European atmospheric drama. The new characters such as Dakota Fanning’s Emma Collins, Eugenio Mastrandrea’s Gio, and Remo Girone’s Enzo feel particularly insignificant compared to Washington’s McCall. The villains, led by Andrea Dodero’s Marco and Andrea Scarduzio’s Vincent, feel cookiecutter and lack originality. Overall though, the film delivers what it promises: a vigilante story.

Conclusion

A slower-paced conclusion to the series.
