Review

It’s always interesting that competing Hollywood studios make nearly identical films at the same time. White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen are two such examples. Both films deal with a terrorist attack on the White House and both films follow the Die Hard formula of a solo protagonist swooping in to save the day.

In White House Down, Channing Tatum plays the lone hero protagonist Cale, a Capitol policeman who wants to become a Secret Service agent. Terrorists attack the White House while Cale is taking his daughter (Joey King) on a tour. Cale must save both his daughter and the President of the United States (Jamie Foxx).

The story is simple and filled with clichés such as the overly heavy political messaging. There are plenty of gun battles and explosions, although the CGI is a tad corny. The villains are also cartoonish, such as the terrorist hacker (Jimmi Simpson) and the white supremacist (Kevin Rankin). Despite this, it’s still a fun dumb summer film. Although the film is a bit too long, I did enjoy the scenes with both Tatum and Foxx, who had great buddy cop chemistry.

Conclusion

A fun summer film that drags on but has great chemistry between Tatum and Foxx.
