Doomguy is back again after the events of Doom and he finds that the demons have invaded Earth directly. Doomguy must take up his shotgun once more and rescue humanity.
Taking up the shotgun once more
The gameplay feels largely the same as that of the first Doom, with fast-paced shooting gameplay mixed with intricate levels with many secrets. Unlike the first Doom, the levels in Doom II are much larger and more complex; I often found myself having to refer to guides to find the secret lever or door in order to progress through levels. The in-game map is also quite bad so expect to go around in circles if one is playing through without a guide for the first time.
More complex levels
I would recommend the 2019 Unity engine port of the game as you can access a ton of WADs directly through the game.
In-game WADs
Basically the same as the first game but with different levels.
This is the first official expansion for the game. The devs saw that Doom II had a very active creator community and decided to commission some mappers to create new levels for the game. It's a pretty cool premise and the levels are fairly well-designed.
