Previous Marvel show reviews:
The show follows the Marvel supervillain M.O.D.O.K. (Patton Oswalt) whose acronym stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. Unlike this ominous moniker, this comedy stop-motion series focuses on MODOK going through a midlife crisis, encountering troubles both professionally with his evil corporation A.I.M. as well as personally with his messy divorce.
I think this comedic spin on supervillainy is pretty refreshing in the ocean of high-budget blockbuster superhero films. The stop-motion, which is reminiscent of shows like Robot Chicken but more modern, is pretty unique too. The humour, unfortunately, is also akin to Robot Chicken; there are many superficial jokes but also some genuinely funny scenarios. Oswalt’s MODOK, while a supervillain, remains very relatable as a character and the supporting cast which includes Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Monica, Aimee Garcia’s Jodie, and Beck Bennett’s Austin, are all pretty solid in their roles. I especially enjoyed the character designs, such as MODOK’s children Lou (Ben Schwartz) and Melissa (Melissa Fumero), as well as many lesser-known villains from the Marvel universe.
A fun and fresh take on supervillains.
