Review

The Boys are back in another season of the subversive superheroes TV show. In this season, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), a new superhero rivaling Homelander (Antony Starr) is brought back from the dead. The Boys and Soldier Boy make an uneasy alliance as they go after Homelander.

This season, while not as memorable as the first two, still have all the characteristic features of The Boys, from the pitch black humour to the over the top gory action sequences. This season sees the human members of the Boys abusing V24, a chemical compound which temporarily grants normal humans superpowers. The season has several themes, such as the rise of populist politics fueled by social media, as well as the ethics of breaking moral and ethical rules to pursue a goal for the greater good. The story diverges from that of the comic books but I personally like the story of the show better.

The acting is very solid, such as Karl Urban’s unhinged Billy Butcher and Jessie T. Usher’s morally conflicted A-Train. My favourite performance, however, has to be Karen Fukuhara’s Kimiko and Tomer Capone’s Frenchie in their almost Of Mice and Men-esque relationship. Another aspect of the show I really enjoy is the immersiveness of the universe, namely the Vought International Youtube channel which contains short videos that complement the main show.

Conclusion

The story gets even crazier as new characters are introduced.
