Review

This story is one of the wilder King stories. It follows a best-selling novelist, Mike Noonan, who suffers writer’s block after losing his wife and who experiences constant nightmares about his summer house in Maine. There are many supporting characters, such as Mattie Devore, a single mother with a daughter named Kyra, and Max Devore, Mattie’s father-in-law and a very wealthy man trying to separate Kyra from Mattie.

The story features classic King elements, such as taking place in a small town in Maine (the setting of this book is so small it’s unincorporated). There are also elements of the paranormal and supernatural, such as visions and psychic connections. In my opinion this book is one of King’s less notable works because the plot feels scattered and the characters (other than the protagonist Mike Noonan) aren’t extremely well characterized. King really tries to tap into the emotional side of his reader by featuring emotionally-charged plot elements, such as a custody battle and even a romance subplot.

Conclusion

Felt like a soap opera at times but the supernatural elements always pulled me back.
