Review

I first watched this in theaters when it came out and back then, I really enjoyed it. After recently rewatching it, I gotta say I still enjoy it. The story follows an aging Indy (Harrison Ford) who is tasked by a greaser Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) to rescue Mutt’s mother Marion (Karen Allen). Indy and Mutt get embroiled in a treasure hunt competition against the Soviets led by the deadly Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett).

The story is classic Indiana Jones, filled with nonstop action and adventure, mixed with an interesting supernatural story. This film, unlike the previous three, is focused more on science fiction as opposed to fantasy fiction as the backdrop for the action. The story felt a bit scattered and focused on the action sequences but it’s not terrible. The characters are decent and there are some of the characteristic banter between Ford’s Indy and the other characters. I’m a tad disappointed that the chemistry between Ford’s Indy and Allen’s Marion was not as strong or witty as that of the first movie. Denholm Elliott’s Marcus Brody is also sorely missed (RIP) but John Hurt’s Professor Oxley is an OK replacement. The stunts are amazing but the CGI felt lacking.

Conclusion

A scattered but entertaining addition to the franchise.
