Review

A Dame to Kill For is another anthology of Sin City stories; this time the plot points include Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) gambling in Sin City, Dwight (Josh Brolin) dealing with his former lover (Eva Green), and Nancy (Jessica Alba) dreaming of revenge against Senator Rourke (Powers Boothe).

This film, much like its predecessor, has a unique neo-noir aesthetic that is reminiscent of the comic books. There are some very dramatic greenscreen shots and visceral scenes of violence, all voiced over with dramatic dialogue. While engaging, some of the novelty of the first film is lost. The story and characters likewise feel weaker than that of the first film. Mickey Rourke’s Marv is always fun to watch and Green’s Ava Lord is perfectly casted, but other than those two, the rest of the characters (maybe except Gordon-Levitt's Johnny) feel either bland or overtly black and white. The stories are also not as emotionally impactful as that of the first film.

Conclusion

A less impactful sequel but still entertaining.
