Review

In this seminal Batman film, Christian Bale returns as the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne whose alter ego is the masked vigilante. This time Wayne is faced with a nihilistic threat in the form of the Joker (Heath Ledger).

The story and writing are both incredible. Tons of interesting themes pertaining to crime and chaos are explored. The nuanced portrayal of all the characters added a ton of depth to the otherwise black and white superhero genre. The dark and brooding setting also set the tone for the film. Bale’s Wayne is solid and the supporting cast which includes Gary Oldman’s Gordon, Aaron Eckhart’s Dent, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Rachel are solid as well. Ledger’s Joker is by far the best performance in this film with his masterful method acting.

Conclusion

One of the greatest superhero films.
