Review

Based on the second Jurassic Park novel by Michael Crichton, The Lost World continues the story of the first film. While the main park has been shut down, Isla Sorna, a new island, is discovered to have been used to clone dinosaurs. A group of scientists including mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), paleontologist Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore), and photojournalist Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) go to the island to study the dinosaurs. Unbeknownst to them, a rival group led by the successor of InGen Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard) and big game hunter Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite) are trying to capture the dinosaurs for a new amusement park.

I felt the second book was unnecessary and a tad repetitive and I feel the same way about the film. The story is repetitive and feels like the writers tried very hard to introduce elements that differentiate the film from its predecessor. The plot feels a tad too excessive and feels like it was written around the action sequences. I also didn’t like the characters; most of them are very one-dimensional and are unlikeable due to them being incompetent. For instance, Harding, who is a badass adventurer in the book, becomes a clumsy and selfish damsel in distress in the movie. The tension and special effects from the first film is still in the second film, though.

Conclusion

Some cool moments but overall not as groundbreaking as the first film.
