Do you think what makes Loki a Loki is the fact that we’re destined to lose?

Review

Tom Hiddleston’s roguish Asgardian god of mischief is one of my favourite characters in the MCU. I had high expectations for this show and surprisingly, the expectations were met. The show follows an alternate reality version of Loki who gets in trouble with the Time Variance Authority (TVA), the bureaucratic organization in charge of protecting the true timeline. To prevent being annihilated, Loki must help the TVA track down and prevent a great threat to the timeline.

Hiddleston is brilliant in this show and his supporting cast, which includes Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, are great as well. Unlike the otherwise action-packed MCU, the action and special effects in this show are lacking. Despite this, the focus on story and character development (which is expertly executed) is refreshing. Some of my favourite scenes in this show are the normal conversations, such as Hiddleston’s Loki musing about philosophy and the universe with his supporting cast. The writing is solid and most characters are flushed out. I’m a sucker for time traveling sci-fi and Loki, with its fantastical premises and 80’s-themed aesthetics, really stands out from the other Marvel shows.

Conclusion

A cerebral Marvel show with strong character development and great writing.
