Review

This is the reboot of the live-action Batman franchise, featuring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne. The story tells the origin story of the caped crusader from the murder of Bruce’s parents to Bruce stopping a sinister plot by the League of Shadows in Gotham.

Unlike other superhero films which focus on the hero, this film focuses on Wayne, the man behind the costume. Bale’s portrayal of Bruce’s psychology is visceral and the writing is dark and gritty (much like Year One). The cinematography by Wally Pfister is thoughtful and atmospheric. Both the writing and cinematography gives this film appeal to both younger and older audiences. The supporting cast is also stacked with talent, such as Gary Oldman’s exasperated James Gordon, Michael Caine’s likeable Alfred, and Morgan Freeman’s cerebral Fox. The villains are also well-portrayed, featuring roles such as Ken Watanabe’s mysterious Ra’s al Ghul, Cillian Murphy’s deranged Dr. Crane, and even Mark Boone Junior’s corrupt detective (a role which he also took in 2 Fast 2 Furious).

Conclusion

One of the greatest superhero origin stories.
