Past Harry Potter film reviews:
There were many things I like about this film; visually, this film looked amazing. The cinematography is excellent in capturing the ominous atmosphere and the bleak English countryside. The film also felt much more like an adult drama rather than a young adult drama; the chemistry which has been built up between Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint by the previous six films is on full display during the film.
The story centers around Harry, Hermione, and Ron being on the run from Voldemort and his followers. The film is very dark and tense, with few moments of respite in between. The movie is also very slow, and due to the fact that the adaptation of the book is split into two films, the first film has ample time to develop the tension and drama between the three protagonists.
I felt that the pacing is a little too slow, especially during the middle of the film. I thought that there was enough content in the final book to have either two short films or one long film, but not enough for two long films. While the "filler" scenes in this film were not entirely pointless (they do serve to build up the depressing atmosphere), I found myself quickly growing bored and zoning out, especially near the middle of the film, where the majority of the drama and filler take place.
A decent film that takes a bit too much time to develop.
