Review

Jared Leto can’t seem to stop catching Ls in the superhero genre; first he was basically edited out of Suicide Squad and now he was handed one of the worst scripts in Morbius. The story follows the origin story of the titular supervillain from the Spider-Man universe; Michael Morbius was a brilliant scientist until he experiments on himself and accidentally contracts vampirism.

The original plan with Morbius was probably to make him into an anti-hero character like Venom but it’s hard to see Morbius becoming a major franchise focus after this disaster. What stuck out immediately was the choppy editing; there were few smooth transitions between the scenes and it felt like watching a series of short films. The cinematography was also very dark and I felt misled about the neon aesthetics featured in the promotional material.

The script felt like it was written by a poorly trained AI; it was clunky and overly explicit in explaining plot details. The acting was also lackluster, Matt Smith’s Milo felt bland and most of the supporting characters were just dry. Jared Leto did have some good moments though; the scenes right after his transformation was really reminiscent of his portrayal of addiction in Requiem for a Dream. Overall it felt that no one was particularly passionate about their role in the film.

It wasn’t all terrible however; there were some really cool CGI action sequences and I also appreciated the film’s many references to Dracula-related works, such as naming the boat on which Morbius performs his experiments the Murnau (after the director of Nosferatu).

Conclusion

This movie was so bad it became a meme.
