Review

While there technically has been an earlier Spider-Man film in 1977 starring Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker feels like the first to me because he’s what I grew up with. This film shows Peter Parker’s iconic origin story as the superhero Spider-Man.

The story is as iconic as superhero stories are; the origin of Spider-Man from Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s original comic is faithfully represented in this film. My favourite aspect of the film is Peter Parker’s character development, which shows his change from a meek and timid nerd to a superhero who takes responsibility for saving innocents. The supporting cast, which features Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn, and James Franco as Harry Osborn are all pretty solid. The romance subplot between Peter and Mary Jane is semi-decent and Peter’s friendship with Harry also shapes Peter’s development. Finally, J. K. Simmons as the impassioned news editor J. Jonah Jameson is very fun to watch.

Conclusion

An iconic superhero film.
