Book Cover Book Cover

"Good old Watson! You are the one fixed point in a changing age. There's an east wind coming all the same, such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast. But it's God's own wind none the less, and a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared."

Review

This is a collection of eight Sherlock Holmes short stories, with a preface by Watson. Honestly I’m impressed that Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories are consistently interesting and unique. The stories from this collection kept me enthralled and guessing just as much as those from the previous collections.

What is very interesting about this specific collection is the context of World War I. Many of the stories deal with military matters, such as blueprints for advanced technology and German spies in Britain. I found Doyle’s tone to be stoically hopeful, which is quintessentially British.

Conclusion

A Sherlock Holmes short story collection published during the war.
